Keeping Busy :)

I finished the Autumn Table Runner for my cousin over the weekend.  I struggled with how to quilt it then bit the bullet and jumped in. Lots of diagonals using the hand quilted stitch on my machine (both ways) then used the wavy line in between every second wider space, both ways. Then another quilting stitch (almost a zig zag) in the other wider space, both ways.  A lot of stitches and maybe a bit chaotic, but it lays nice on the table. :)

I'm in full on trip anticipation mode this week, so no actual sewing.  The three day Paintbrush Studios 2016 New Block Blog Hop started on Monday, so I've used the blocks in that to get some practice in with Electric Quilt 7.   I set up a Pinterest Board just for the Blocks (12 of them a day, 13 today although one of them I couldn't find) so when I get the time to actually sew some of the blocks I'll have them all in one place.  Lots of talent being shared by/on/at  Quilting Jet Girl, Meadow Mist Designs, Late Night Quilter, and all of the talented quilters they each hosted,  so well worth checking out.  I designed my version of the blocks in EQ7 and did a layout for each day, it was a great way to work on my EQ7 skills.

3rd block second row is much nicer than my mock up, working with curves and angles is still in the learning phase for me'

March 30
1st Block second row should be appliqued but I couldn't figure out how to do that in EQ7

Yesterday I found a new 'I HAVE TO DO IT' QAL!  It's designed and hosted by Janeen at Quilt Art Designs, so of course it's Paper Pieced.  "Lighthouse" starts April 6 and runs for 8 weeks, so will be completed on 'the other side of the pond', but will live on the wall on 'this' side of the pond.  Being a Bluenoser, no way could I NOT do a QAL featuring Peggy's Cove Lighthouse.

Q1 of HST Sampler QAL

The end of March brings the finish of Quarter 1 of the HST Sampler QAL hosted by Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts.  It's Free, quick and a great way to hone up on making HSTs.   I've learned several ways to make HSTs and in the process have gotten much better with keeping my points... not perfect, that's not ever going to be 'me', I sew fast, always have.  I like to get right down to it and buzz along to completion... of the block, because finishing the actual quilts is definitely NOT my strong suit.
That dang 1/4" still gets me into trouble!  Why a 1'4"???  Why not a little bigger so that the right side of the seam gets grabbed by the feed dogs more easily...  My 1'4" skills ARE getting better :)
I sewed my Q1 blocks together Top = Candy -  Ninja - Lantern and Bottom = Stepping Stones - Mountains - Formation all of the tutorials can be found here .  Quarter 1 was done on the Canadian side of the Atlantic.  Roll on Quarter 2, which will be done on the England side of the Atlantic :)
We've been sharing our blocks on Instagram using #modernhstsampler and on the Blossom Heart Quilts Facebook Group and today is the Q1 Linky Party at Blossom Hearts Quilts.  39 Links and counting :)

Wednesday Catch Up

Got ready for my morning walk, tunes in hand and headed downstairs to see the yucky rain had started soooooo... back upstairs to the fun room to work on 'Dear (Grand)Daughter :)
Dear Daughter is a paid for BOM/QAL hosted by Sherri Noel at RebeccaMaeDesigns.  For this one, I'm 'Free' to pay for a BOM :)  Not often an option I like, but this one HAD to be done.  It was a one time fee for 12 monthly 'Chapters', which are really mini quilts all on their own.  We get a sneak peak each month so we know if any of the blocks that month are duplicated in future Chapters.  I really like that because I'm working from my purple stash, so having the sneak peak I was able to make sure I had enough of each color for my EPP petals.  Mine is for my Grand Daughter, Penny Lane.  Purple is her FAVORITE color, and ballet is her favorite thing to do.  She goes to a French Emerson School so I will likely include some French words.  This morning I fused the ballerina to Chapter 2 and pinned the three finished 'chapters' to my display wall for a photo.  I still need some words for Chapter 3, I'm thinking 'Precious' with a pair of ballet slippers hanging from the block on the left side. I am loving this one so far!

Chapters One, Two and Three

Over the weekend, Monday and Tuesday I worked on a table runner for my cousin Sandra.  She liked the one I did for Elm Street Quilt's 'Harvest QAL' last fall, even offered to purchase it, so I told her if she got the supplies I would make one for her, to her measurements.  I had to add a few blocks to make it long enough and fiddle with the sashings (they ain't perfect), quite a bit of picking out and resewing, but it's done and ready for quilting.  Not sure I'll get it finished before I go to England... but maybe :)

Aurifil Designer BOM

The Aurifil Designer BOM 2016 is all about blues and white, and is Free.  Sounded like a great way to use up the blues on my shelves :)  One 12 inch block is designed and released each month by a different designer, with the added bonus of getting to know each designer a little.  The sharing is done via a monthly link on Pat Sloan's blog.
January - Swirl Away - Heather Valentine @ The Sewing Loft
I gave Swirl Away  a whirl when it was released in January, ran into issues of my own making and tucked the partially made block into my orphan block bin.  It just made more sense than picking out all of those seams.   It went much smoother the second time around, mostly because I actually followed the instructions.

February - Lake Life - Kari Carr @ New Leaf Stitches
When I saw all of those teeny tiny HSTs I groaned out loud!  And somehow, the pattern slid to the bottom of my BOMs :)  Until March.  I really wanted to do March's block and just couldn't until I had done January and February's.  We won't go into why, it's just 'one of those things'.  I don't have the fancy dancy Clearly Perfect Angles templates but turns out I didn't need them.  It ain't perfect, but it's done :)

Febraury - Lake Life

March - Improv Star - Christa Watson @ Christa Quilts
This one was fun and went quickly.  And now I'm all caught up with the Aurifil Designer BOM 2016. Just in time to fall behind because the blues won't be travelling with me.

March Paper Piecing

I've gotten three paper pieced blocks done so far this month, two  for 'My Favorite Things', hosted by Jennifer Ofenstein at Sew Hooked and one for Quilt Art Designs Beginners 2016, hosted by Janeen at Quilt Art Designs.  My Favorite Things runs from January to December with sharing happening on Instagram using #favthingsbom, Flickr and Facebook.  The patterns are free for the day of release (1st of the month).  No sharing set up for Quilt Art Designs Beginners 2016, the patterns are free and quite simple.  My Favorite Things will either become 'wall art' for my Fun Room or a cuddle quilt for myself.  Quilt Art Designs Beginners 2016 will be for my youngest grandson Connor  He was 'spiderman' crazy when he was younger :)  Now that he's a teenager life is all about baseball :)

Wednesday Catch Up

Bargello is a Free QAL hosted by PattyD at Elm Street Quilts.  We're two weeks in, having cut the strips last week and sewing them into tubes this week.   Another relaxing and quick QAL, great for filling in the time while I tick off the days until my next trip across the pond.  ~~~17 Sleeps~~~

In Our Garden March Blocks

In Our Garden's March Blocks are called 'Busy Garden'.  I did a bit better with the applique block this month, though it's still backwards and still needs to be appliqued (it's just stuck for now).  I prefer the pieced blocks, heat and bond applique is tedious.  Linking up with  Sew Incredibly Crazy's Block 3&4 Link Party
In Our Garden is a FREE BOM hosted by Amy at Sew Incredibly Crazy.  Two 12.5" blocks a month (Feb 2016-Jan 2017), one pieced, one applique.  Sharing is done via Flikr and monthy  Link Partys at Sew incredibly Crazy.  Fun and Free, two of my favorites :)  Link on the sidebar.
