More Paper Piecing

Earlier in the month I blogged about the Reindeer peeking in the window HERE and this week I got him quilted and bound.  I decided to be very sparse with the quilting, letting the paper pieced units speak for themselves and just quilt some lines in the window frame. As it's a wall hanging and won't get washed much (if at all) I figured sparse would be ok.  I just love him!

I followed along with the Halloween Haunts Blog Hop and was lucky enough to get a cute Halloween Paper Piecing pattern from Quilt Art Designs .  I did some free motion stippling on this one, orange on brown, which was very brave of me, especially after the amount of work that goes into a paper pieced project.  But it turned out lovely :)

Because it's Friday and these are both finished I'm also linking up with TGIFF at Faith and Fabric Design.

Winner :)

I was one of the lucky winners in last Month's A Lovely Year of Finishes draws and my prize arrived today! Thank you Lori at Stitch & Giggles for the lovely moda Ho! Ho! Ho! by Deb Strain charm pack.  And thank you Shanna of Fiber of All Sorts and Melissa of Sew BitterSweet Designs for hosting A Lovely Year of Finishes :)

On October 15th the 10th Block for Snapshots, Let's Go Surfin', was released.  Another cute block, and except for a little blip, I managed to sew one of the tires on upside down and had to rip out a few seams, the block went together nicely.

Over the weekend I worked on a little 'Bat' table runner and finished it off this afternoon. It turned out great, the colors are vibrant and the table is now ready for Halloween :)  I followed an Elizabeth Hartman tutorial at Oh Fransson, called Barn Bats,  a little confusing at first, but I got there in the end.

My Happy Wall in my Fun room so far this month :)

Let's Bee Social #94

Yesterday I worked on the October Row for Spring RAL, just need to do the watering cans to be appliqued on the row.   I started them, then got bored and moved on to the October blocks for Moccasin.

I also got the Camera block for Snapshots done.  It's a little bigger than I thought it would be, so I guess it will be part of the backing, as the pattern intended.  I had thought I'd put it on the front.  My display/design wall is filling up :)

Paper Piecing... again

Paper piecing has always been so confusing for me... looking at a mirror image for guidance, flipping back and forth between front and back and NEVER getting that first piece right but I've seen so many awesome blocks that I've really wanted to 'get it'.  Last week I took advantage of a Craftsy Class sale  and got one of their Paper Piecing Classes.  Working on 4" blocks doesn't agree with me at the best of times, paper piecing one was just nuts!  After two attempts and lots of blue air I put the Craftsy Class aside and went to my Blogger feed and clicked on Quilt Art Designs, such a great blog for Paper Piecing inspiration!  The October Quilt Art Quarterly Magazine has 18 patterns in it, several of which I WANT to do!  I followed a tutorial Janeen has on the blog than dove in head first on one of the QAQ patterns.  9 pages of pattern pieces, each piece having between 3 and 24 pieces... the eyes almost had me in tears... but OMG the end result is awesome!!!  I did get some good tips from the Craftsy Class, so that wasn't a complete waste.

Not sure how I'll quilt this guy, nor what I'll turn the 18 1/2" x 19" block into yet, for now he's just hanging out on my design wall making me smile :)

This isn't a BOM... but I'm linking up with What A Hoot's BOMs Away anyway because he is just so darn cute!  Enjoy your Monday and Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating it today :)

Harvest QAL Finish

The Harvest QAL at Elm Street Quilts finished last Monday, with this week dedicated to the finishes.  I waited until I was back in Canada before starting this one, but the blocks were simple construction and small enough to use what I had on hand, so getting caught up wasn't a problem.  Thankfully there weren't too many blocks so I didn't get frustrated working on small blocks :)

Finished Blocks

I turned most of the blocks into a table runner, with the extra geese, spools, and leaves safely tucked away in my orphan block bin, to be used in another project.  I quilted wavy lines and used a cheap batting, errrrrgggggg, so there are more (than usual) wrinkles sewn in.  I still love it though!  This was a fun, relaxing QAL using wonderful fall colors.  I love this time of the year!

Keeping Busy :)

This week I've been working on the setting blocks and final layout of Vacation Time,  a Pat Sloan BOM that I started in January.  My fabric choices, Annali Twigs/Meadow/Arches and Teal Floral. were less than inspiring for this particular BOM, but I chugged along with it.   The blocks were basic, no frills and went together each month without any problems. The August border blocks put me off. They were supposed to be 4" hourglass blocks, but making 100 2 1/2" HST units just didn't appeal, then or now ;)  I replaced them with 4 square blocks made with strips, and used more fabrics than the original design.  I was trying to get some color in the otherwise drab palette.  I still have another border to add, but  haven't decided what color to make it... I think I'm done with the brown twig fabric :)  Some fabrics just look better online ;)

I took a break from Vacation Time and quilted the Harvest QAL.  Just a peek at this one, I want to have a finish for Friday :)

BOMs Away 10/05

October's Chocolate Star is another basic star block.  I think I prefer the triangle method of doing HSTs  rather than the sew on either side of the line method.  For some reason my HSTs turn out nicer.

Midnight Mystery's blocks were BIG Courthouse Steps, 9 of them.  They sewed up  quickly and I love them!
