June Finish

Another  'A Lovely Year of Finishes' finish :)  My JUNE GOAL post was #2 at  FIBER OF ALL SORTS Goal Setting party.   I settled on the heart design, made eight and then had it suggested to me that I put the rows in the opposite direction on some of the hearts... so, more cutting and sewing.  That left me with five extra heart blocks, three for the back and two for pillows :)  The back won't get seen much, but it saved me from having to purchase more backing fabric and turned out just as nicely as the top, bonus :)

This 'over the back of the sofa' quilt idea started with a small Tapestry purchased on a recent trip to Venice.  I wanted a heart design because the Cruise that took us to Venice was a celebration of our having met 40 years ago.   All in all, I'm more than pleased and because the top came together so nicely, I just chugged along and finished the project.

WiPs and Let's Bee Social #77

Not a lot of time at the sewing machine this week, so far.  My wrist and thumb (right hand) are complaining painfully.  Yesterday I couldn't manage my scissors so gave the sofa cushions the pleasure of my company for most of the afternoon :)
I've settled on the layout for Venice and made three more heart blocks with the rows going in the opposite direction, that left me with 5 extra blocks.  I used two for cushion tops and three in the backing, along with the left over heart fabrics.  The back is almost as nice as the top :)  This is my June 'A Year of Lovely Finishes' project, so the finish pictures will be posted at the end of the month. If it is finished :)

Hillside Houses is still hanging over the back of the door. It's all sandwiched and waiting to be quilted and I love it, but haven't a clue how to quilt it.  I'm limited with my Janome and lack of FMQ skills so it will be straight (sort of) lines.  I'm thinking 1 1/2" apart in both directions (most of the blocks are made up of 3 inch pieces) or maybe 1/4" either side of the seams or should I go diagonal? Decisions do my head in ;)

I finished the last row of the Beach Quilt, got them sashed and together, pieced the back and have it all sandwiched and ready for quilting.  I really don't like working with solids!  They are so unforgiving and show every wrinkle.  Quilting this one will be a nightmare for me :)  No pictures of the back, I'm hoping once quilted the blue I used will look less horrible, wrinkly speaking.

This morning I settled on the colors for my 'hexie' cushions and I'll work on some more of them tonight while watching Corrie and whatever D channel surfs. I made some on Monday night, going with the EPP technique rather than using glue basting.  They came together quick enough.  I don't have many to do, so I shouldn't get too bored with them :)

I hope your day is a great one and the rest of your week is full of sewing moments :)

Hexies ~~~Shiver~~~

I love the new bistro table set that sits on the back deck.  The top is granite and marble 'hexies' .  I'm gathering fabrics to make cushions for the back and seats of the two chairs and KNOW that hexies would be the way to go, BUT I'm not sure I have the stamina to make them.   This morning, the first blog on my morning read was Meadow Mist Designs, and what do you know... hexies.  :)  Even my morning read is saying 'you HAVE to do hexies'.   I like the idea of using glue basting for all those fold ins and I think sewing the hexies onto the background will give a nice raised texture to the cushions.  I'm not completely convinced yet, I guess I'll have to give a few a test run first.  Any tips or site suggestions for making hexies greatly appreciated :)  Has anyone used leave in foundation paper making hexies?  Or the wash away stuff?  I'm all about easy and quick ;)

Meadow Mist Designs' Midnight Mystery Quilt Along started this month with Fabric Selection being our first reveal.  Picking fabrics is trial and error for me, made especially hard with mystery quilts.  I've got one on the go already, Vacation Time,  and I'm really not pleased with my fabric choices now that I'm half way through.  Needless to say I was a little hesitant this time.  Didn't stop me from shopping online however... another hit and miss ordeal.   Still, clicked my shopping cart through to purchase.  Ordered on the 9th, arrived on the 12th, not too shabby :)  The fabrics are awesome and best of all, they play well together :)  Roll on Midnight Mystery!

WiPs and Let's Bee Social #76

Wednesday again, and how did it get to be June 10???  Between exercising (my least favorite thing to do) and helping out with deck scrubbing I still found lots of time for fun room activities.  Lots and lots of cutting for my Venice Quilt, but the blocks came together nicely, just need to be squared up now.  I made 8 and have to decide if I'll use all of them in the top, or just 6 and use the other two for cushion covers.

I also got Block 10 and 11 of  Pretty Little Quilts'  Hillside Houses done (Link to the QAL is on the sidebar).

Block #11

The blocks are getting a little repetitions now, as we near the end, and I think I'm starting to rush a bit :)  I laid the two blocks next to the others and noticed an Oops.  LOL  Not a difficult fix.  One more block to go :)

Pretty Little Quilts also has a tutorial for a SUMMER BEACH QUILT which I couldn't resist :)  It's a 'row' quilt, which I really enjoy doing.  I'm using what I have on hand for this one and realized after getting the first three rows done that I really should have gone with white for the background, as the pattern suggested, instead of the Ash.  But, it was what I had... Nice big blocks, which I really like :)

Let's Bee Social #75

This week I've been working on Heart Blocks trying a couple of different patterns in different sizes.  Four trial blocks later and I'm still not sure which pattern I'll go with for my Venice Quilt ~~~sigh~~~

I pieced together the June Blocks for Moccasin in between heart blocks.  Two  9" x 9" 'Wow' blocks this month.  Lots and lots of seams with all of those HSTs and Flying Geese.  Not my favorite blocks, that's for sure!

I also pieced blocks 8 & 9 of Hillside Houses and joined them to the rest of the neighborhood.  A lot of repetition in this QAL, I think I'll be happy to see the end of it :)  I have enjoyed it though, kind of like a jigsaw puzzle.

I hope you week has been a good one and the one coming up is even better :)  Linking up with Lorna's LET'S BEE SOCIAL at Sew Fresh Quilts.

June Goal

My June Goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes is to piece the top of my Venice quilt.  Of course, I have to cut the pieces first.  I have settled on the palette and started cutting the strips. I did two trial blocks last week, the first one is a good size but it looks sloppy and the heart design isn't distinct enough.  I like the second one much better, but it's huge and needs to be downsized in order to work well with my Tapestry.  My plan is to have three Heart Blocks in the top row and three in the bottom row, with the Venice Tapestry centered between... at the moment unknown blocks.   June will be a 'travel free' month, so meeting my goal shouldn't be difficult.
