April Finish for ALYoF

Knowing that I was going on a trip to Spain for some fun in the sun I finished my April Goal (Post #5) early.  Good thing too as I haven't been near my sewing machine in almost two weeks!  Haven't blogged either and it almost feels like I'm starting from scratch.  Things change so quickly in this electronic world... or maybe I'm still swirling red wine in/on the Costa del Sol :)

Fox Kits is finished!  A wonderful little pattern by Lorna McMahon at Sew Fresh Quilts. I enjoyed this from start to finish!  My only whine, I wish I had quilted it at home on my little Brother with the wonderful curvy stitches.  My Janome here in England doesn't have as many stitch options.  I guess I'm just going to have to work on my FMQ  ~~~shiver~~~  But for Finley's Fox Kits, it was straight (mostly) stitches, changing  directions to get some texture :)  Still fun and I'm happy with the results.

I used various Fat Quarters, mostly Wal Mart specials ;)  The back is pieced bits of woodland animals, colored dots on brown (also used for the binding), with Finley being centered, pretty much :)

I'm linking up with A Lovely Year of Finishes at Bitter Sweet Designs if I can unscramble my head enough to sort out HOW to :)  Pop over and take a peek at some of the wonderful April Finishes!

Please :)

I finished the tops for Brooke and Tayla's play mats and now I'm waffling on the backs and bindings.  The finished tops are approximately 41" x 41 1/2 ",  I have enough in each color of 'dimples' (sashing/ borders fabrics) to do the backs and can make the bindings out of the left over strips.  But, maybe the one fabric background will be too boring for a three year old and a one year old?  They are meant to be play mats, so the back doesn't really matter too much, except, kiddies being kiddies, it might ;)

I have 7 Kate Spain's Horizen Fat Quarters (the same line as the tops) which I can use with the strips and some of the backing fabrics to make pieced backings and then bind them in the dimples.  Any suggestions? If I go with the strips for the bindings, how long should each piece be or should they be varied?  What's a good smallest/largest size?  Joined straight or angled?

Another WiP Wednesday :)

Not a lot of sewing this week, the weather has been warm and sunny and calling me outside, but I have managed to get the tops of  the 'girl's' playmats done, except for one more border and a good start on the quilting of Fox Kits.  I should get it finished before I leave for Spain, so no rushing when I get back to meet my April goal in A Lovely Year of Finishes :)  Oh, and Moorass got a new shirt for his 'warm weather travelling'.  He's all set for picture ops :)

08/04 WiPs

Getting my 'Fun Room' organized on this side of the Pond has been slower going than I anticipated, but I've finally managed a couple of days of sewing, mostly getting reacquainted with my Janome... which is not as much fun to sew on as my Brother:)  I already know I'm going to miss my wavy stitch... back to not so  straight stitching I guess ;)

First through the machine is the backing for Fox Kits, nothing fancy, just basic piecing of the fabrics I brought over from Canada.  FINLEY was done before I came over and I worked around it.  This is my April goal for ALYoF so I was glad to get the backing done.  I still need some 505 Basting Spray so I can get the quilting done.  Hopefully I'll get it this weekend.  With a week in Spain coming up, I'll be pushing it to meet my goal.

I got the April block for Pat Sloan's Vacation BOM done.  Penny Arcade turned out nice.  It was one of two BOMs I was able to cram into my suitcase.  The others had to stay behind, with soooooo much else.  I had lots packed, but had to remove most of it because of weight restrictions.  My carry on was a struggle as it was.

And I've been working on log cabin style pattern called Scrappy Steps from the March 2015 issue of  popular patchwork, which was waiting for me when I arrived (along with January, February and Aprils) :)  I'm using a Jelly Roll for this, so zipping along nicely.  I'm hoping to make a couple of play mats for D's great nieces.

Elephant Parade

A quick post to link to the Elephant Parade linky party at Sew Fresh Quilts.  Pop on over and drool over the sweet variations of this QAL.  This was a fun, relaxed and easy to follow QAL.  I didn't do as many blocks as most, and wasn't sure what I was going to do with them until close to the end, but I love the little wall hanging the blocks turned into :)  I've blogged about Elephants on Parade several times so I'll just post a picture of the finished results, hanging on my design wall.  It will eventually 'live' on the Family picture wall in my stairwell, but I got a little busy with travel plans, so for now it's still hanging in my NS 'Fun' room.

ALYoF April Goal

My April goal is a small one as time in the fun room will be limited due to settling in on 'this' side of the Pond and a holiday to Spain.  I hope to finish 'Fox Kits',  a sweet little quilt by Lorna McMahon at  Sew Fresh Quilts.  The top is already pieced, so I should be able to meet my goal... once I actually get my 'fun room' set up and pick up some batting.  I remembered to pack the top and backing material, so yay, now I just need to get over the jet leg (exhaustion from the three day ordeal my trip turned into).
